We were interested to see the correlation between population density and number of offences per resident from the London Crime Graphs dashboard. Except for Westminster (whose numbers are skewered by the West End) and perhaps the wealthy Kensington and Chelsea, the boroughs don’t stray too far off the straight line.
But isn’t this the sort of behaviour normally associated with rodents? Thinking back to A-Level biology, surely it’s rats that get all nasty and aggressive the more of them there are per square area? What’s going on Londoners, maybe it’s something to do with living in close proximity to so many rats (we’re all within 6 feet of one apparently)?!
Whatever the reason we’d best keep a check on the borough populations until we can learn how Tokyo (where the ward densities are mostly 10,000-20,000 per square km) manages to keep its crime figures low – and don’t say they’re all ultra-rich bankers!
